My girlfriends uncle has an old 1972 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible and its in bad shape, i’ve never seen it its out on her grandparents farm in Winnipeg but apparently looks like a cow ran into the back end… How hard would u say it would be to repair it, is it worth it…i’ve done work on cars but nothing to this degree and I only know the minimal things. Its been kept outside too for years only covered by a car cover and a tarp. How much would it cost, any ideas?

A: The car has a fiber glass body. If you’re planning on doing your own repairs and do not have previous experience with this type of material, don’t even think about it.

A: There are no plans so far. Keep an eye on the major auto shows like the upcoming Detroit Auto Show. This is when General Motors will debut their concept cars.

I agree with ls1bird. the roof is a major structural component of a car. Making this car a convertible would introduce body flex and reduce it’s outstanding cornering abilities.

A: I’ve sold a vehicle on e-bay and it worked out well for both the buyer and seller. E-bay motors has some good guidelines. Here are some suggestions:
Don’t do anything you wouldn’t normally do when buying a car such as sending money to a stranger.

A: Ok, first off, Chevrolet is the maker of the car Corvette, hence its called Chevrolet Corvette. Just like Honda Civic. And a car looks cool in white and hot in black…what you want depends on what you prefer: hot or cool look. And my list for convertibles if as following:
1. Porsche (Boxter is the only convertible they make, and nothing in the world drives the same as a Porsche).
2. BMW (not all BMW are beautiful as convertibles, but the one I would go for is the Z4, the only car that comes even close to the Boxter)
3. Audi (they have proved to be the best 4 seater convertibles, and the TT roadster is a very good car)
4. Corvette (though i would prefer the hardtop, because the converible loses with the top gone)
5. Cadillac (they have not been very good for the past couple of years, but with the CTS, they are edging in on the germans, although caddy has still not given any good convertibles, and the XLR is horrid to drive.)
6. Pontiac (the cars have no feel at all…horrible in every way)

Q: What kind of gas mileage can i expect?
I’m considering buying a 1995 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 convertible. The car has the LT1 V8 engine in it that Chevy used to put into the Corvette.

A: I drove a 94 Capris Classic patrol car and it had the Corvette engine in it and when I was patrolling and running down speeders I averaged about 10 MPG but when I did escort duty escorting over-sized loads we ran 35 to 55 MPH during the escort then I went the speed limit back home and it got about 20 MPG. I thought it did quite well when driving normally. It also had tremendous power, it ran like a big block Chevy. It would get up to over 100 MPH in no time and that was what we had to do to catch speeding traffic.

A: There were no convertibiles made by any GM division in 1984. The convertibile was reintroduced by GM in the Corvette in 1986. The rear center brakelight assembly for the convertibile is in the deck above the emblem.

A: You would be better off super charging a Corvette vs turbo charging.

You can put a Procharger on for about $7,000 installed. Go to West Coast Corvettes and check out the options. Magnusson’s are a little more expensive, and will require an after market hood as well. This may not be an issue if you are going with a body kit.

Check out East Coast Superchargers – they do great work. However, unless you don’t care about the warranty on the car, supercharging or turbocharging WILL void the warranty.

You may also want to consider upgrading the brake system to the ZO6 brakes (or comparable aftermarket). That much more horsepower will require better stopping power.

All this being said, I would not do any of the above. Go with a cold air induction unit, long tube headers, hi flow cats and a good exhaust system (recommend Corsa). Better than that, just buy a ZO6 or a ZR1.

Something to consider…A stock C6 Corvette with 436hp will smoke 95% of the cars on the road. The car only weighs 3100lbs. Doing the above will give you about 35-40 more hp which will take care of another 2-3%.

It is completely safe to tote your child around in your Corvette if you have them properly secured. You unfortunately will not be legal with an additional person riding with you as they will be improperly secured.

how do you replace the front speakers in a 1990 corvette convertible? I believe they are 4×6’s. We can’t get the panel off to access them without breaking it… does anyone know how?

A: Start by removing the press in keepers in the bottom of the door panel(round, interior color)there are 5 of these along the very bottom of the door panel. next remove the 2 phillips screws from the interior door pull handle, the one you use to close the door(look straight down into it) then remove the one phillips screw from behind the interior door release handle. carefully with a 90 degree pick, pull straight out on the manual door lock knob, it will pry off, then slip that piece forward and off so the door panel will clear the lock rod, the mirror/window switches simply pry out of the panel, Carefully wiggle the release handle and switches back through the holes in the door panel when removing the panel, slightly tug the door panel up and towards you, it should come right off, good luck and be careful…. I hope this helps.

A: I would buy the mercedes slk 350, My father in law has 2 vettes, I have driven them both frequently ( to the dealer on more than one occasion) I have a mercedes E320 4matic. which is the daily driver. My mercedes has 74000 miles on it and requires little or no maintainace that I cannot do myself. I could go to the dealer for my yearly service but all the parts are readily available online for a reasonable cost. My merc. is fully loaded, heated mirrors,seats, washer fluid,power seats. car tells me how much oil, washer fluid, outside temp, premium sound cd,tape, alarm, traction contol all wheel drive 281 hp (nice) it even washes its own head lights, anyway… They don’t make a corvette that can compete with my E class daily driver not to mention a slk. BTW my father in law prefers to take the mercedes to the gollf course when we golf and every once in a while I will let him drive. I have never driven a car as nice and reliable as my mercedes benz. Both vettes,one convertible and one t-top are exteremely loud(thats why the have bose systems otherwise you wouldnt hear the radio) and the handling sucks, driving on the freeway with ruts is like a rollercoaster with your eyes closed, just hold onto the wheel. Granted my benz was $62k new but they are in a different class.

there is a black 2006 c6 convertible for sale for $57000 that i am interested in, this C6 has every option a zo6 comes with, all the options together cost almost $11000, its an 06 model but it has 0 miles on it,for the second car im interested in is the 07 Boxter, which brand new cost around $52000 with tax with hardly any options, i personally am thinking about getting the C6 but the interior is very cheap, but since the Boxter is German its in a totally different class, which car is a better buy?

Q: Can a performance chip make a 95 BMW 325i much peppier than a 97 BMW 328i Convertible?
My son has the 95 BMW 325i and I have driven it for months while he was in Iraq. I have the 97 BMW 328i convertible and my car is not nearly as peppy. He bought a chip for his car so it would perform better only to find it already had one in it. The new chip made little or no difference.

His car does have a performance air filter and air scoop, but that’s about all as far as the engine is concerned. When I drive my stock convertible it is sluggish compared to his car. It is a noticeable difference. We both have about the same number of miles (about 125,000 mi) and had similar tires. I didn’t really think a performance chip could make such a difference on old cars, but it’s a noticeable difference in the two cars. Both cars are automatic and neither one is dogged around.

I am aware my convertible is probably a couple of hundred pounds heavier, but would that make such a difference in performance? Both cars are running well and neither needs a tuneup or any other maintenance.

Is it really the chip making his car feel quite a bit peppier or is it the extra weight of my car making it feel sluggish compared to his? If I had never driven his car I would still feel my car is somewhat sluggish. However, I am used to high performance cars as I have had three Corvettes and a Porsche so maybe I expect too much. The last time I had a fast convertible I had a fuel-injected 63 Corvette Sting Ray, which was far peppier than the Vette I have now (1989) or the BMWs.

A: To be honest, it could be any number of things. It really depends on the upkeep of your car versus his. And yes, the added weight of the convertible is absolutely slowing you down. But there’s not much you can do about that. You could try “chipping” your car, but it’ll always be several hundred pounds heavier. Go to www.bavauto.com – they have quite a few performance upgrades for E36’s, that’s a good place to start. Personally, I’d recommend a turbo kit if you really want to blow your son’s doors off. But that’s not exactly cheap.

I just read in popular mechanics that covers are bad in the rain, and when it is windy. has anyone ever had a car cover damage the paint when used? Q: My 97 BMW 328i Convertible plastic rear window turned brown and faded the past 6 months can it be salvaged?
I goofed and let my car sit for several months in the hot California sun while I drove my other car and was out of the country for a while, when before it was always garaged. there are some smuggled hotcars here in the philippines like a convertible corvette, audi a8, nissan armada, a few bmws, a lamborgini and some porsches……….those cars will be destroyed i think today because they are smuggled and our president ordered that those hotcars must be destroyed…………………I think our president is not thinking right because she can auction of those hotcars which costs more than 18million pesos and the money can be used by the government for improving our country

I said y you have let me use the car before she said you got a speeding ticket. I said you know that it was 5mph over the limit and and i was slowing down that the had speed limit changed. she said I don’t care the answer is no that is it. so i took the car out. and i got in a one car accident.
there was a kid in the road going after a ball and I could not stop in time so I put the car in a telephone pole. the front axle does not look good. How do I tell Her.

And I do not have a job because I am in college and intern in real estate.
The house is in my name so she can’t kick me out. but the car is in her name. and mine is in my name

A: I never take mine thru a regular car wash. I paid way too much for it to risk damage to the undercarriage and also damage to the paint. Commercial car washes are very hard on your paintjob. Find a good hand car wash or do it yourself.

Q: Problems with a 1987 Chevy Corvette with a 4+3 manual transmission?
I have a 1987 Chevy Corvette Convertible with a 4+3 manual transmission with less than 50,000 original miles. Yesterday when I started it the clutch would not fully engage and the car started backing up even though the clutch was fully depressed. When I tried to stop and shift into 1st the shift lever would not budge…it was like I was not pushing the clutch at all. I had noticed the day before that the shifting lever was hard to operate. I don’t suppose there could be an “inexpensive” explanation for this or is it something that is going to cost me another 500 bucks to fix?

A: Sounds like a hydraulic clutch problem. First check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder. If it’s too low, it may have sucked air into the line.

I know how much this car is worth without this engine but I want to know if this was an engine option that did not occur much in the impala in ‘69.

A: Perhaps one of the most lovable collectors items today. We have a few in our country with the original paint, interior, engines and gear boxes and very carefully maintained. I cannot confirm the engine on one of the cars, since it has been a long time when we talked to the owner about him selling the car, but I recollect it was a V-8. The white wall tyres and covers were original as well. In 1992 he wanted US$ 20,000/- and I am sure someone must have paid him that amount.

A: I agree with the above post, but what something may be worth and what you might get for it are 2 totally different things. Since you can get many C5s now for low 20K with low mileage, including some older Z06s, it will be a tough sell unless someone specifically loves the C4 chassis Corvettes. I was a big C4 fan until I drove a C5.

A: i know a couple a guy’s with 350z’s and they luv’em, they are fast, handle great BUT when they need fixin, holy smoke are their part’s COSTLY, out side of that they are a sweet ride but then so is the vett.

Q: Why is my 1991 corvette convertible overheating?
I have a 1991 chevy corvette with a 5.7L engine. I am having problems with temperature gauge showing 260 degrees F at the red line when the vehicle sits running at idle after 10 minutes. I have flushed the radiator, put in a new water pump, put in a new thermostat, and replaced the secondary radiator fan relay. What else could be causing the vehicle to overheat? I have spent countless hours doing these repairs with my father-in-law and have spent over $150 in parts… Any suggestions at all will be appreciated… thank you ahead of time
of course we have checked the oil and that has nothing to do with it unless it had a cracked head which it doesnt

A: I have an 05 coupe that I love. It’s LeMans Blue and it’s great. I know several ppl that have both coupes and verts and love them. For the $50,000 that I paid for it, it was a bargain. Performance, good looks and reliability. What more could I want?

A: Like them a lot. The C6 looks a lot better than the C5. Mainly because they do not have the flip up lights anymore and look a lot more sleak and clean. My friend has a 2007 Z06 and it’s sickest car if you can afford it. Performance is awsome and all that comes with it is unbeatable. Plus everything stock with them looks good including the rims. His color is the nicest I have seen it really stands out and sets it apart from the other vettes out there. It’s the La Mans blue which is not offered anymore. But you can get it matched it was the same color of the C6 ZR-1 first production vette. this is his 10th corvette and says that he will own nothing but a vette, they are really reliable. The price for a 06 used depending on miles can be from high 40,000 to as low as maybe 20’s if it has a lot of miles. Used Z06 with around 10,000 miles is around $75,000. Love the cars and think it is the best designed corvette so far. If you wanna see a really tight C6 vette look at Pratt and Millers C6RS. You can take the C6 you have and have them upgrade it for you to be like their race cars. http://www.prattmiller.com/c6rs/

I always hear my friends talk about cars like Ford Mustangs, Ferraris, Chevy Camaros, Volvo Convertibles, Corvettes, Maseratis, Mercedes and Porsches just to name some that my friend told me about. What do these names mean and how do I “name” a car when I see it? For example, when somebody sees a Ford Mustang, how do they know it’s a Ford Mustang and how can they tell?
